Another change for visitor visa holders

Previously

Visitor visa holders could only study for up to three months per calendar year, without having to obtain a student visa or a variation of conditions. This is if they attend primary, intermediate, secondary, or composite school for a single period.

What’s new?

Visitor visa holders can now study for up to 6 months in a year.

Why the change?

This will help people who wish to continue to study from week to week, while they wait for flights to depart New Zealand. For example, people studying in English language courses.

School-age children will also benefit as they will be able to study for more than one term as a visitor. They can also now study in Term 1 of a calendar year, even if they studied in Term 4 of the previous year. If they meet the definition of domestic student as defined by the Ministry of Education, they will not need to pay international fees.

Who does this apply to?

You are eligible if:

  • you are in New Zealand; and
  • you held a valid visitor visa on Friday 11 September 2020.

Other things to note

If you are granted a visitor visa after 11 September 2020, the standard visa condition allowing three months of study will apply.

Immigration New Zealand will let you know if this new rule applies to you.
